Description
Very Rare SETH EASTMAN, Oil on Canvas "SEMINOLE PEACE PARTY" CA 1840: Noted Artist of Native Americans, their way of life, and Western Forts. BG Eastman (1808-1875) was 1829 West Point Graduate and served at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and later during the Seminole Wars in Florida. Painting is of Four Seminole Warriors at a Peace Conference, amid Grove of Trees. In fact the main tree in the painting is distinctly a Florida Oak with Hanging Spanish Moss, a new experience for the young Soldier from Maine. Likely Painted while Eastman was in command of Fort Fanning, on the Suwannee River. Until this Time Eastman was Exclusively Concerned With Landscapes, But the Presence of Florida Indians Prompted a Desire to Experiment with new Subject Matter, That of Painting the Native American, and started him toward what would be the Pinnicle of His Artistic Achievement. Only a Half Dozen of the Seminole Paintings have been Accounted for. Another artist published, Eastman has "done so much to make us acquainted with the Seminoles of Florida" (Patricia Condon Johnston "He Chased Indians" 1995) Painting is 35 1/2" x 25 1/2" in Frame. Painting is owned by a Descendent of Seth Eastman and has been passed through the family since it was painted to the present day. Painting was Professionally Restored in 2004; Copy of Conservation Report is Available. It is Rare for an Eastman Canvas to Become Available on the Marketplace, as most are owned by Federal Government. Last Eastman painting on the marketplace and sold was sold by Sotheby's, New York, May 5, 1998, for $937,500. This is a rare opportunity to purchase an Oil on Canvas by one of the most Famous Painters of Native American Life in the 1840's. (250000-400000)
