Description
Forty-six feet of rare American carved oak figural moulding. Originally installed in Cornelius Vanderbilt II Fifth Avenue Mansion circa 1880.
The mouldings have both pierce and carved scrolls, foliate, and flowers helping to frame cupids, heads, spread wing eagle, and the Vanderbilt family crest. These carvings which were crown moulding decoration designed by Saint Gaudens were part of the original design of the mantle piece for Vanderbilt's 5th Avenue mansion "The Daytonian". There are four separate sections: #1 = 13' 7" #2 = 11' 10" #3 = 9' 2" #4 = 11' 6.5" The mantle is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
