Description
1) Typed letter on Johnson's personal letterhead, dated August 3, 1927. It reads, in part, "As one of those who saw me pitch my first game in Washington, I am grateful to you for your attendance at the Twentieth Anniversary game on August 2, 1927, and for your fine support throughout the intervening years." His closing fountain pen ink signature rates 6/10. Letter exhibits original mailing folds, a diagonal vertical crease and paper clip rust stain, none of which distract the eye.
2) Silk ribbon (2.25x4.5") announcing "1927--I saw Walter Pitch the First Game--1907." Minor staining, otherwise fine. Included is a 2000 letter of provenance from Johnson's grandson attesting that the ribbon was saved in the Hall of Fame pitcher's personal scrapbook, noting that the letter listed above would have accompanied another example of same.
3) A game program for the August 2, 1927 contest. Minor staining on cover, otherwise nothing beyond minor handling wear. This, too, comes with a letter from Johnson's grandson attesting to Walter's former ownership. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
