  • "1889, CUSTER'S LAST FIGHT_CYCLORAMA_SCENE#2":

  • Presenting a grayscale version of the photograph by Allen and Rowell (of Boston), of 1/10 sections of 'Custer's Last Fight", at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The market is flush with paintings of different artist's imagination of this event which are not to be confused with this offering. This specific Lot is a photolithograph 'after' an 1889 documentary photograph of 1 of 10 sections of a painted Cyclorama by the Boston Cyclorama Co. A
cyclorama is a curved curtain or wall used as a background of a stage set to suggest unlimited space”. Commonly referred to as a cyc, cycloramas date all the way back to the 19th century where they were widely used in German theaters. Onlookers have remarked that, compared to gallery exhibitions of the era, cyclorama's were the equivalent of
    an IMAX experience.

But rather than just a stage, the entire building of The Boston Cyclorama Co. itself was a classical Victorian style 127 foot circular steel-trussed dome that was built specifically to house the 'Battle of Gettysburg' Cyclorama painted by French artist Paul Philippoteaux, which preceded the Custer Cyclorama. A particularly well-known artwork with the title Custer's Last Fight is that of Cassilly Adams-which again is not to be confused with the formal photographs, paintings or artists of the Custer
Cyclorama. While the title is the same, this famous painting by Adams was a work made into lithographs by the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Assn. that has no known affiliation to the Custer Cyclorama.

Unlike the Civil War, there were no observors, photographers or plein air painters present at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. However through research, assembling 1st hand accounts from Indian scouts, etc. the painters of cyclorama's were able to piece together realistic scenery. In the case of the 1889 'Custers
Last Fight' Cyclorama it was executed in 10 sections by a large team of artists led by E. Pierpont. The Boston structure was engineered to present 400 x 50 foot Cyclorama's.
The exhibit included over 600 individual painted figures and a dramatic landscape background. The program booklet had 30 pages and an additional two pages of advertisements. Illustrated with wood engravings and including a folding plate, the program itself was 7" x 10.5", with the original illustrated tan wrappers. After the exhibition was over in Boston, the Custer Cyclorama went on tour in Europe.

The original cabinet cards that the photographers Allen and Rowell produced on-site at the original exhibition were successfully auctioned by the esteemed American auction house Heritage Auctions in their 2006 June Political Memorabilia and Americana Auction #635 / Lot #25194 sale for $1,195.00 ~ *Please refer to accompanying supplemental detail images for: *1] The photographer's stamp on verso of cabinet card..*2]
