IV.
Hilaire-Germain-Edgar de Gas, better known as Edgar Degas (Paris, July 19, 1834-ibid., September 27, 1917), was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker.Considered one of the founders of Impressionism, although he himself rejected the name and preferred to call it realism or realistic art, 1 Degas was one of the great cartoonists in history for his masterful capture of the sensations of life and movement, especially in his theater plays. . . of dancers, horse races and nudes. His portraits are highly valued for their psychological complexity and the sense of truth they convey.
