A PAIR OF CHINESE CINNABAR ELEPHANT SEATS
20th Century
The red oxide lacquer is built up over a wooden base of the ceremonial elephant forms with their heads and tusks pointed downward, trunk raised up and ears pinned back. The stalwart creatures feature incised seats and tasseled saddle blankets with an allover pattern of fretwork, shells, foliate forms and clouds. The sides of the blankets each feature the incised motif of a vase of flowers on a delicate pine needle ground.
Condition: Very minor chips. Minor restorations to finish.
