[Chetham (James)] The Angler's Vade Mecum:or, a Compendious, Yet Full, Discourse of Angling, first edition, rather browned, a few small stains, cropped with loss to a few head-lines, final leaf slightly defective at lower outer corner just touching catchword, later calf, gilt fish motif in centre of boards and triple gilt rule border, spine gilt in compartments with angling motifs, a little rubbed, [Thacher p.109; W&S pp.59-60; Wing C3788], 12mo, for Tho. Basset, 1681.
***Rare, especially with the 4 leaves of Appendix and Errata at end, the former including a list of nineteen dressings for flies. The text is thoroughly practical and the author acknowledges others such as Markham, Walton, Venables, Cotton, etc. G.E.M. Skues, notoriously difficult to please, wrote of this book "...a really brilliant piece of work...a sheer delight to read, from the preface on, not only for it's caustic irony, but for the invaluable common sense which it displays"..
