Original art by Gene Ahern for "The Squirrel Cage" Sunday comic strip, dated January 2, 1938. In this strip, Ahern's bearded hitchhiker thumbs a ride from pedal-to-the-metal motorist Otto Auto. Fans of R. Crumb will observe the hitchhiker's uncanny resemblance to Mr. Natural, and will also notice that the bearded vagabond's nonsensical catchphrase, "Nov shmoz ka pop," has popped up in Crumb's own work. According to Don Markstein's online Toonopedia, "Cartoonist R. Crumb has acknowledged [Ahearn's 'Little Hitchhiker'] as an influence in the design of Mr. Natural."
