Description
The Scotts rebelled against British rule in 1689, 1715, 1719 and 1745. Unlike most other warriors, Scotts attacked in a foot charge hacking with broadsword and shield. The opposition was a mix of infantry and horsemen and polearms such as this were used to attack and unhorse mounted troops. This example is 20 1/4" in length, forged welded from multiple pieces with hammer finish and lamination seams evident. the base is mounted with a back hook, forge welded on. The tapered tang is made to fit into a hardwood haft, secured with an iron ferrule. The haste with which this weapon is made testifies to the urgency of the call to battle. It could have been made for any of the Scottish rebellions and may have served in all of them.
