**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec, ca. 15th century CE. A fine collection of 6 copper pieces known as "hoe" money, as it was used as currency in the Aztec empire. The profile of each is flat, with a slightly raised periphery along the inner curve of the blade tips and part way up the handle. Examples like these are known as "tajaderos," the Spanish word for a chopping knife, due to their shape. A rectangular handle extends from the center of the blade. These were standardized currency in the Aztec world, said to be equal to roughly 8,000 cacao seeds. In the early days after the Spanish conquest, this type of currency continued to be used in the absence of minted coins from Spain. This collection has developed beautiful green patinas and light earthen deposits throughout. All is displayed in a Riker case. Size: 4.35" L x 6" W (11 cm x 15.2 cm); case: 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Loss to tip of one blade as shown. Minor nicks to the others, but intact. Minor bending of forms. Earthen and mineral deposits scattered throughout. Nice green and russet patina on all. Displayed in modern Riker case.
