Description
1864 CIVIL WAR 1ed Report on Fort Pillow Massacre Prisoners African-American
The Battle of Fort Pillow, also known as the Fort Pillow massacre, was a famous Civil War battle that resulted in the massacre of black Union troops attempting to surrender. Eicher even notes this battle as bleakest, saddest events of American military history. The United States Congress printed a report of the event, noting prisoners and conduct of war, which this example was published for the House of Representatives in the 38th Congress.
According to Larned,
Here is the testimony taken by Messrs, Wade and Gooch as a sub-committee of the joint select committee on the conduct of the war, together with its report… The testimony was taken chiefly at the Mound City, Ill. Hospital, most of the witnesses being wounded survivors of the Fort Pillow affair. The operations of General Forrest against Union City, Tenn, and Peducah, Ky., are also touched upon.
