Description
Rare Framed New Zealand Maori Tiki with Provenance. The translucent dark green jade (pounamu) Maori amulet "Tiki" of figural design, probably from the 1920s, framed with after market chain and mounted on an orange fabric background and framed in a black enameled frame under glass. The frame has its original backing paper intact with an envelope attached containing a holographic note which reads: "Pendant, Maori greenstone (Jade) "Tiki"/Purchased from an American soldier/who smuggled it out of New Zealand in 1943. It was given to him by a Maori girl in Auckland. These Tikis are handed down from mother to daughter as good fortune/ and fertility tokens. This one is a fair specimen and is probably late 19th or early 20th century."  Also included is a generic photo of a Maori maiden. For discussion of the history of the Hei-Tiki see: The Maori As He Was: A Brief Account of Maori Life as it was in Pre-European Days  by Elsdon Best, 1934. Wellington: Dominion Museum. Size: 5/8-inches tall X 2 1/8-inches wide. Frame is 5 1/2-inches X 7 1/2-inches. Condition: Excellent.
