Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience ushabti covered in lustrous green glaze. The figure presents in mummiform atop an integral plinth, holds a pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and supports an incised seed bag behind the left shoulder. Almond eyes beneath slender brows, a plaited false beard, a slender nose, and full lips comprise the visage beneath a tripartite wig. A column of hieroglyphs is inscribed in front of the legs and when translated reads, "To instruct the Osiris, the we-net-jerwy priest, Hor-sam-tawy, born of Tia . . ." Size: 1.1" W x 4.4" H (2.8 cm x 11.2 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition
Repair to feet at ankles, with one large chip and light adhesive residue along break line. Chips to integral plinth, with slight bending to overall form that occurred during the firing process, light encrustations within and minor softening to some finer details and hieroglyphs, and light fading to glaze pigment. Great preservation to facial features. Most hieroglyphs are still visible and legible; hieroglyphs near repaired area of ankles are damaged and illegible.
