Description
There is a great story and "ironclad" provenance that goes with this item. Marine pilot Major Arthur "Bud" Jones III of Northbrook, Illinois, was chosen from fifty or more pilots available that day to ferry these national heroes by helicopter from the military section of O'Hare Field to Meigs Field and back. These signatures were obtained during one of those flights. This was the day that America had been waiting for- our astronaut heroes were finally released from the required quarantine on August 13th (after nearly three weeks). An unprecedented day of celebration was planned- first a ticker tape parade in New York City, then one in Chicago, and then on to Los Angeles for a third. That evening, they attended a State Dinner with President Nixon and numerous congressmen, governors, and ambassadors from around the world where they were presented Presidential Medals of Freedom. Major Jones was honored to play a vital role on that historic day and has now decided to pass his signed souvenir on to a new owner. Included with the lot is a copy of a local newspaper article about his memorable piloting mission as well as a group of snapshots taken that day.
