Description
Rare Japanese Kawabaori Leather Fireman's Jacket, Edo Period. Smoked leather (either deerskin or water buffalo) coat with design created by a smoking process (inden) which created the design and also made the textile waterproof. Before the smoking dying process, rice paste is applied with a stencil onto the leather to create a pattern reserved in white on the brown smoked leather. Such textiles were worn by high-ranking Japanese firemen, merchants and carpenters in the Edo period.
