Description
[RIECKS, William H. (1882-1963)]. Scrapbook related to the life and career of Sheriff William Riecks. Circa 1963. Large folio. Personal photographs, newspaper clippings, and mugshots. Extensive coverage of Game Warden Raymond B. Heacock on December 11, 1916, with Riecks’s personal copies of the suspects’ mugshots, and letter of commendation from the Department of the Treasury dated 20 July 1926 for his department’s cooperation in enforcing Prohibition-era policies. William H. Riecks served as sheriff of San Joaquin County, California from 1915 to 1930. Through Riecks’s tenure the county of San Joaquin saw a succession of dramatic changes, including with the introduction of the automobile and a great boom in population. In 1927 he swore in San Joaquin’s first female deputy, “Dead Eye” Annie Delaney. A strong supporter of Prohibition policies, Riecks made a name for himself as being a particularly ruthless enforcer of anti-alcohol laws.
