Description
Exceptional WWI group from Brigadier General Dr. Walter C. Montgomery, MD of New York City, who served as the 27th Division Surgeon as a Colonel during WWI in France, and was brevetted a Brigadier General by the State of New York. A 1900 graduate of Columbia University, he entered the Army in 1908 and served as Asst. Surgeon of the 12th New York Infantry, and as a Major in 1917 served with the 74th New York Infantry on the Mexican Border. Post War, he became a professor at the Cornell Medical College until 1937. In WWI, he earned a Distinguished Service Medal with the following citation: Lieutenant Colonel Montgomery served with marked distinction as Division Surgeon of the 27th Division. When confronted with a shortage of personnel, he displayed marked initiative and resourcefulness in organizing additional sanitary personnel. During the action along the Hindenburg line, 25 and 30 September 1918, by his high professional attainments, sound judgment, and loyal devotion to duty he so conducted the personnel at his disposal as to provide successfully for the evacuation of 4,000 casualties in four days. He also earned a Silver Star Medal as included is a copy of a 1930s award card authorizing it. Gen. Montgomery was decorated by the US, Poland, Britain, and Belgium. Lot includes his beautifully hand engraved numbered wrap brooch DSM (1744), early wrap brooch unnumbered Silver Star, numbered Mexican Border Medal (8611), WWI Victory Medal with three bars, New York sterling Conspicuous Service Cross numbered 103, NY Mexican Border Medal, NY WWI Medal, Belgian Croix de Guerre with Palm, Poland Polonia Restutia, Belgian WWI Medal, bronze marked British 1914-1918 War Medal, BB&B Bronze 1915 National Match Team Prize Medal awarded by Congress to the Military, sterling Tiffany and Co. NY State Team Small Arms Practice 1915 Marksmanship medal engraved Major W.C. Montgomery, MC, 12th Infantry (weighs 53 grams), sterling Tiffany and Co. Winning Team McAlpin Shield Marksmanship award instituted in 1904 also engraved the same as above (27.3 grams), Sterling pin back General star, multi piece construction wool 27th Division patch, and several fragile newspaper articles about him. Comes with some copied research. The medals that have traceable numbers all match to him. The display case does not come with this group.
