Major General Benjamin L. Hunton (USAR), Howard University, Washington, DC. General Hunton was commissioned through the ROTC program in 1942. During World War II, he served as Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Howard University. He was the first Black general officer in the reserve forces. Hunton held several command and staff jobs. From 1972 until his retirement in 1977, he was commanding general of the 97th Army Reserve Command with headquarters at Fort Meade, Md., and responsibility for all Reserve units in Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and Virginia. He graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College. In addition to an MA in History from Howard, he received a PhD in Public Administration from American University.
