Description
Positively Identified Powder Horn from the 11th Virginia Regiment, Formed in 1777, Also Known as Morgan's Rifles. The 11th Virginia Regimanent was organized Feburary of 1777 drawing men from Loudoun, Frederick, Prince William, and Amelia Counties. Field officer's at Valley Forge were Colonel Daniel Morgan, Lt. Colonel John Cropper, Major Thomas Snead, and Major Thomas Massie. Colonel Daniel Morgan was in command from November 12, 1776 to September 14, 1778 hence the nickname "Morgan's Rifles". They entered Valley Forge with 326 men assigned, but only 81 fit for duty. When they left, Valley Forge with 254 assigned and 152 fit for duty.
The regiment saw action at the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. The unit was reassigned to the 2nd Virginia Brigade on 22 July 1778, and it was reorganized to nine companies and redesignated as the 7th Virginia Regiment.
