Description
2nd century AD. A terracotta mould-made lamp with ring handle and outward-sloping shoulders, separated from the discus by a ridge, heart-shaped nozzle, base-ring with a circular groove, discus iconography composed of a hippocampus with a lion’s face. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, nos.357-358, for the type. 96 grams, 10.6cm (4 1/4"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a German collection collection formed since 1970. This is a lamp of Loeschcke VIII; Bussière form D IX type. This form groups together lamps with a plain shoulder and a heart-shaped nozzle. Among the discus decors we can find subjects from mythology, from amphitheatre spectacles, animals and geometric patterns. The date of these lamps is usually Flavian to mid-second century AD
