Description
2nd century AD. A terracotta mould-made lamp, flat shoulder with a garland, filling hole in the lower left field, heart-shaped nozzle, base-ring with four circular grooves, discus iconography comprising Jupiter looking left. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, no.361, for the type. 98 grams, 11cm (4 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a German collection collection formed since 1970. Loeschcke VIII; Bussière form D X 1a. This form groups together lamps with a heart-shaped nozzle. Among the discus decors we can find subjects from mythology, amphitheatre spectacles, animals and from geometric patterns.
