Description
18th-19th century AD. A bifacial bronze pipe tamper modelled as a classically robed female standing with left arm and hand raised, a naked child kneeling at her right foot, grasping at her garments; spool-shaped base. Cf. The Portable Antiquities Scheme Database, id. LANCUM-032EC1 for this item and DENO-31D302 for similar. 16.2 grams, 60mm (2 1/4"). Found whilst searching with a metal detector in Leicestershire and Warwickshire, UK, by Robert Ward; accompanied by a copy of Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report number LANCUM-032EC1. Although the child lacks wings, it is possible that these figures represent Venus, Roman goddess of love and beauty, and her infant son, Cupid. [No Reserve]
