Nathaniel Rogers (1787-1844) Pair of Portrait Miniatures: Henry Lewis Pierson (1807-1893) and Helen Maria Pierson (1807-1845)

With label inscribed, "Henry L. Pierson and his bride Helen Maria daughter of Isaac Pierson/ Painted by D. (?) Rogers in 1830 - the year of their marriage which was December 1830", watercolor, matted, in brass frames.

Note

Henry Lewis Pierson, son of Jeremiah Halsey Pierson and Sarah Colt Pierson, married his cousin, Helen Maria Pierson, in New York in December 1830. She was the daughter of Isaac Pierson and Helen M. Fort. Together, Henry and Helen had eight children, of whom their youngest son Isaac died at one year of age. Helen died the following year in 1845, and mother and child are buried together in Gates of Praise Cemetery in Ramapo, New York. Henry is also buried there.

both displayed in later cases and mats, the mats with some wear and discoloration; man: flecks of paint loss to corners, and to lower left corner on chair; lady: area of discoloration above head, probable sign of overpainting although no fluorescence under UV light, some small areas of loss to upper corners and lower right corner, back is loose- case missing pins, probably water spotting to left side of body, some areas of light discoloration near both shoulders, and to upper left and right edges
