Note
George Hudson Beaman was born in Poultney, Vermont, and was the owner and editor of the Rutland Herald. In 1844, he purchased the struggling Herald, which changed hands in 1840 after the death of its former owner William Fay. Beaman sought to change the newspaper's direction, making it more modern and streamlined, and burned Fay's records as both a symbolic and literal act of progress. Additionally, Beaman was a Whig and abolitionist, and aimed for the Herald's mission to reflect those principles. The Rutland Herald, although going through a number of subsequent changes, still operates today. For more information, see "A Timeline of the Herald's Own History: Two Hundred Years Reporting the News," Rutland Herald, December 7, 2019.
