Description
The Dan people believe that ‘in’ and behind’ this world exists an essential force, spirits called dü which is usually described as a power that is present in all aspects of the world. In order to incarnate in the material world, these spirits inspire a person with thoughts about themselves and thus take the form of a mask. The mask is hand-carved of dark wood and decorated with carved ornaments and animal hair.Late 19th - early 20th cc.
