Description

John F. Kennedy Appoints Robert McNamara as Youngest Secretary of Defense

1p, measuring 22.5" x 18.5" (sight), Washington, D.C., dated January 21, 1961. Signed "John F Kennedy" and countersigned by Dean Rusk, Secretary of State. The document appoints "Robert S. McNamara of Michigan…Secretary of Defense", with an embossed paper seal of the United States affixed near the left-hand corner. Framed to the overall size of 25.75" x 21.5". Boldly signed, very fine.

At the time of his appointment, Robert Strange McNamara (1916-2009) was the youngest appointed Secretary of Defense. He served under both Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, from 1961 to 1968. Many believe McNamara played a key role in escalating U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
