Description
14th Century French Manuscript Re: Region with Historical Ties to the Albigensian Crusade, Plague, & 100 Years' War

A Latin manuscript on vellum relating to the Château de Caylus, in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, Occitanie region of southwestern France, dated March 25, 1324. The document is not translated, but bears a contemporary docket (No. 457) in Latin verso; a modern gloss in French and English verso; and a modern typed description in English recto. The modern gloss verso reads "25 mars 1324 / Written in Cheylus / dept of Lot et Garonne / France" while the modern typed description recto reads "Deed dated March 25, 1324, from the Archives of the Chateau de Caylus, Department of Lot and Garonne, France." (Tarn-et-Garonne is located slightly east of Lot-et-Garonne and is believed to be the correct department.) The modern typed caption is currently affixed to the bottom edge of the manuscript, and the whole is hinged along the bottom to a thick yellow plastic protector which could probably be removed. Isolated stains and folds, else clear and bright mount with dark and bold ink. 10.375" x 8.125."

Since not many people can read medieval Latin, the manuscript should first be considered for its considerable visual appeal. The striking handwriting continues over 24 lines of text and culminates in a stylized drawing of an hourglass and quatrefoil measuring nearly 5" in length.

On an historical level, this document is also of interest. The medieval village of Caylus, located about 100 km northwest of Toulouse, was razed in 1211 by Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229). From the 13th-14th centuries, the town built a marketplace, a fortified enclosure, and the Church of St. John the Baptiste of the Market. In 1348, about 25 years after this manuscript was recorded, the Plague carried off about one third of the village population. In 1362, about 40 years later, the town surrendered to English attackers during the Hundred Years' War.
