Richard Feynman's Personally Owned High School Scholastic Award, Ex-Sotheby's, Ex-Richard P. Feynman Family

A scholastic award presented to future Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988), engraved with his name as "R. Feynman / 1st Prize / Fall 1934" verso. The Dieges & Clust polygonal medal is stamped 10K gold-filled. It is engraved "I.A.L." at top and depicts a lamp of knowledge perched on a closed book. A red, white, and blue lapel ribbon is attached at top. Expected wear commensurate with age, especially to the ribbon, else near fine. Accompanied by the original Sotheby's auction tag. The award measures approximately 1.25" wide x .75" long; the total with the ribbon measures 2.5" long. Ex-Sotheby's, Ex-Richard P. Feynman Family.

This award was presented to Richard Feynman in the Fall of 1934, when he was a junior at Far Rockaway High School, a public school in Queens, New York. The "I.A.L." shown on the award may stand for nearby "Inwood Academy for Leadership," but it was most certainly bestowed in acknowledgement of Feynman's earliest exhibition of smarts. The award may also have been for mathematics, since Feynman had been teaching himself advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus since age 15. Feynman later earned his undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate from Princeton University.

Richard Feynman was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965. His many contributions to the field of theoretical physics include research/discoveries in quantum computing, quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, particle physics, nanotechnology, and the fluidity of elements based on temperature.
