Venable The cruet service consisting of a Gothic-form revolving caddy and six cruet vessels, exterior of rounded bays decorated with wild game motifs depicting fish and fowl, the cut-glass cruets with silver-plated covers resting in aproned bays decorated with foliate motifs, raised on rounded revolving base atop four scrolled feet. The invention of electroplating has always fascinated me because it made silver available to millions of people. In the 1850s this patented design must have seemed truly marvelous as the doors pop open when the castor is rotated. An innovative design of which several American museums have examples. The cruet presents well. While the platform rotates, the mechanism which opens the cruet bays does not function properly, pitting to cover, missing condiment spoon, cruets are married and mismatched, flake to upper rim of one cruet, fleabite to one stopper, plating loss to salt shaker cover, plating is in good condition.
