Prima edizione. Magnifica opera figurata, in legatura coeva. L’edizione fu finanziata dal re Luigi XV. È illustrata da una raffinata antiporta di Oudry, incisa da Cochin e da 275 stupende figure in tavole fuori testo, a piena pagina, disegnate da Oudry e incise anch’esse da Cochin e dai migliori artisti dell'epoca. I finalini e gli altri ornamenti xilografati nel testo, che tanto contribuiscono all’eleganza dell’opera, sono disegnati da Bachellier e incisi su legno da Le Sueur e Papillion. La storia delle illustrazioni delle Favole di questa edizione è raccontata nell'"Avertissement de l'editeur". Ourdry aveva disegnato liberamente per il proprio divertimento, diversi soggetti di paesaggi e animali. Cochin si assunse la responsabilità di trasformare questi disegni a mano libera in stampe finite. Sebbene l'abilità di Oudry nel ritrarre gli animali e la sua interpretazione dell'umorismo di La Fontaine difficilmente possano essere superate, la mano sicura ed esperta di Cochin ha fatto molto per migliorare i disegni originali, in particolare le figure. First edition. Magnificent illustrated work, in contemporary binding. La Fontaine's work was financed by King Louis XV. It is illustrated by a refined Frontispiece by Oudry, engraved by Cochin and by 275 beautiful figures in full-page out-of-text plates, designed by Oudry and also engraved by Cochin and the best artists of the time. The tail pieces and the other ornaments in the text, which contribute so much to the elegance of the work, are designed by Bachellier and engraved on wood by Le Sueur and Papillion. The story of how they became the illustrations of the Fables of this edition told in the "Avertissement de l'editeur" in Volume I. Ourdry's subjects being landscapes and animals, which he had drawn freely for his own enjoyment, Cochin undertook the responsibility of turning these freehand drawings into finished prints. Although Oudry's skill at portraying animals and his interpretation of La Fontaine's humor can hardly be surpassed, Cochin's sure and experienced hand did much to improve the original designs, particularly the figures. He redrew them, correcting the figures and background and supplying precise lines for the engravers. The work is offered with a valid export license.
