Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, late Third Intermediate Period to early Late Dynastic Period, 25th to 27th Dynasty, ca. 744 to 404 BCE. A mold-formed faience pendant depicting the ibis-headed deity Thoth, god of mathematics, intelligence, and the moon. Thoth presents in a striding pose atop an integral rectangular plinth, holds both arms to the sides of his pleated skirt, and bears a rigid posture backed against a dorsal pillar; a suspension loop is drilled through the middle of the dorsal pillar. His avian head exhibits petite eyes and a smooth cranium, both behind a lengthy, curved beak. Covered in faded layers of green glaze pigment, this is a wonderful pendant figure from ancient Egypt! Size: 0.42" W x 1.65" H (1.1 cm x 4.2 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896
