Tall 5th C. Islamic Glass Sprinkler Flask w/ Millefiori

Item Details

Description

Near East, Islamic, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. This is a beautiful and dramatic glass sprinkler jar with millefiori patterning and applied spirals. The free blown vessel has a bulbous body and lengthy cylindrical neck. The neck is decorated with rigaree coiled around the exterior and the shoulder is adorned with six red and white fused glass-cane inlays, creating floral shapes known as millefiori. The elongated neck was designed to prevent evaporation of the precious liquids - like perfumes or scented oils - kept inside. The exterior is enveloped in silvery iridescence and mineral deposits. Size: 3.5" W x 8.75" H (8.9 cm x 22.2 cm)

Condition

Body is repaired from approximately 6 pieces with stable fissures radiating from this area. Losses to rigaree applied threads to neck. Silvery iridescence as well as mineral and earthen deposits throughout. Some active flaking of mineral deposits when handled. Pontil mark on base indicates this was free blown.
