Item Details
Description
West Africa, Guinea / Liberia, Loma (also Looma, Lorma, Loghoma, or Toma) peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderfully abstract wooden, textile, and hide figural element from the top of a staff, or attachment. The wooden maskette has an elongated ovoid face with a prominent nose and drilled eyes that are perforated all the way through, perhaps also serving as suspension holes. From the top are three petite nubbins as horns - indicating this is a ceremonial Nyangbai. From the back of the wooden head is a second wooden section, a textile panel, and piece of hide with remains of fur intact. Surmounted on the top is a brass bell and a dangling iron chain. Nyangbai masks were created by the Loma people on the Guinea and Liberia border. Their political and social life is organized around a powerful men's secret society known as the poro, and masks play an important role in the ritual movements of the society. A miniature one like this was probably for placement on an altar or on a staff. Size: 5" L x 4" W (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
