Description
This is a signed painted wooden castle music box from New York artist and visionary Arto Monaco (d.2003). Monaco began his career as a set designer for MGM, Paramount, Warner Brothers, and Disney Studios. While serving in WWII he built a German village in the Arizona desert to train soldiers. He moved back to the Adirondack region and began to create fairytale style village amusement parks. He developed Old McDonald’s Farm in Lake Placid, Frontier Town in North Hudson, The Land of Make Believe in Upper Jay, and Gaslight Village in Pottersville first, and later, in Lake George. Storytown became what is now known as The Great Escape. The castle bears the signature of the artist and is dated for 2002. It plays "It's a Small World Afterall". It came from the Charles R. Wood estate of Upstate New York. Philanthropist Charles R. Wood founded Storytown and built up what became the Great Escape. 12 x 5 3/4 x 6".
