Description
Hiroshi Sugimoto (1948) is a Japanese photographer and architect. He leads the Tokyo-based architectural firm New Material Research Laboratory. He began his four-decade-long series Dioramas in 1974, inspired by a trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Surrounded by the museum's elaborate, naturalistic dioramas, Sugimoto realized that the scenes looked fake but jumped to life when he looked at them with one eye closed. All perspective disappeared. He saw them like the camera sees them.
