Item Details
Description
PILLAR-MOLDED QUART BAR DECANTER, colorless with applied blue ribbons from base to mouth, tall petticoat form with eight protruding ribs, applied wide convex neck ring, and a rounded bar lip ground on interior, polished pontil mark. Extremely rare with blue ribbons continuing to mouth. Attributed to the Pittsburgh area, possibly M'Kee & Brother(s). 1850-1870. 12 1/2" H, 5" D base.

Provenance: From a Mid-Atlantic collection.

"Catalogue note: We could locate no other examples of this decanter with fully extended blue ribbons. The 1859/60 M'Kee & Brother catalog illustrates this petticoat form with convex neck ring described as a ""R. & R. Pillared"" decanter. It was offered in both a pint and a quart size.
A comparison of the Bakewell and M'Kee factory catalogs of the 1860s and 70s seems to indicate that the Bakewell firm used a concave neck ring while M'Kee employed the convex neck ring. However, it cannot be assumed that either style of neck ring was exclusive to these firms."
Condition
Shallow chip to one rib at shoulder, alternating base points reduced by polishing.
