Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful vintage stacking jubako (bento) container with three separate boxes, a lid, and tray - all made from wood with Negoro lacquer. The containers all have black lacquered interiors, and 1 container has a divider on the interior for portions. The underside of each box and lid is signed in gold gilt by the maker. The exterior is also painted with a black lacquer then covered with a russet red - with age and time, the red wears away, creating a rustic and mottled surface, which is prized in Japanese culture as a sign of age and the jubako's durability! Negoro is a style of lacquerware developed in the Negoro-ji temple during the 14th century and this lacquer technique has ensued for generations because of its beauty that increases with age! Negoro lacquerware embodies the traditional want for simplicity and minimalism for utilitarian objects - perfectly exemplified by this jubako! Size of jubako & tray: 9" L x 5.25" W x 5.75" H (22.9 cm x 13.3 cm x 14.6 cm); single box: 5" L x 3.5" W (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
