Fine Tairona Tumbaga Pendant Macaw Bird
Fine Tairona Tumbaga Pendant Macaw Bird
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fabulous and adorable tumbaga pendant in the form of a bird with a high amount of 55% (equivalent to 13K+) gold, cast using the lost wax process. This bird is a macaw or parrot - emphasized by the large, curved beak, the outspread wings, and broad tail. Note the finely delineated rope details around the bulging eyes, outlining the wings, and accenting the body! Two rings for suspension or additional ornaments are situated on the top of the head and beak tip. The undecorated back reveals the concave body and hollow head of the casting process. The Tairona produced some of the most complex, beautiful gold alloy objects ever made in Pre-Columbian times. This bird was perhaps worn by someone powerful in the society, and it may have indicated a clan affiliation or role. Birds were regarded as cosmic messengers, and in creation mythology, macaws brought the first maize seeds to the Tairona people. Size: 1.9" L x 1.58" W (4.8 cm x 4 cm); quality of tumbaga: 55% gold, 25% silver, 20% copper; weight: 8.7 grams

Provenance: private Eagle, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s
