Alexander Fisher Arts & Crafts Double-Sided Enameled Copper, Silvered Metal and 'Jeweled' Small Book Cover
Circa 1914
In the Limoges style, decorated on the front side with a saintly woman dressed in a mottled green and blue colored robe and cape in solitary prayer before a hovering dove and on the back side with a female angel on her knees and holding a lily, against a cobalt blue colored ground, each outer border containing latin verses, each corner inset with emerald green or ruby colored 'jewels,' signed A.F. Length 4 3/4 inches, width 4 1/4 inches.

Condition
one green "jewel" and one red "jewel" are missing; one of the other red "jewels" is detached but present; there are some losses to the main enameled figural plaques, including to the rim edges and corner tips; some rubbing to the enameled borders has removed some of the Latin text; there is some substantial loss to the four enameled segments along the book's spine; the interior book part is detached on its back cover and the fabric lined interior front cover is padly stained and mildewed; the interior pages of the book are uniformly soiled (mildewed?); the edges of the pages are edged in gilt; some book clasp appears to be in good working condition; some information has been written about the book's history on two pages (upside down) at the back of the book, "Guy Wyndham From His Mother May 1919. This book was made by Alexander Fisher. It was sent to Paris to be [illegible] in 1914 and remained in Paris in a place of safety during the Great War."
