Description
Large porcelain cat, kitten sculpture, original size of a sitting kitten [8.1/2" / 21.4cm tall]; Mid-Century Modern figurine created by the ELPA Company, Alcobaca, Portugal in the 1960s-1970s. The porcelain mark of ELPA Alcobaca Portugal is present on the bottom. Aqua bluish glass eyes; white crackled glaze ['antique look'] with hand painted flowers over the white glaze.
The porcelain figurine is 8.1/2" tall; 6.5" x 4" [21.4cm x 16cm x 9cm]; crackled glaze, no chips, very good condition.
It is thought that working with clay like material, kaolin or white stone, has been practiced in Alcobaca since the Neolithic period. Polychrome clay sculptures, created by monks, appeared during the construction of the Alcobaca Monastery and in the 18th century the first pieces appeared with the word "Alcobaca" inscribed in the middle. In 1875, a ceramic factory was founded by Jose dos Reis, an artisan from Coimbra-- this is the first documented reference to a decorative faience production in Alcobaca. Using white clay from the region, they produced hand-painted crockery and stamping tableware that supplied the local domestic and decorative market. Today, the ceramics of Alcobaca display drawings of flowers, sayings and also landscapes. The word "Alcobaca" is not always present and the designs can be quite colorful and in shades of blue and green.
