17th century Russian (Church Slavonic) apocryphal devotional treatise: THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, popular among the Old Believers, those who separated from Russian Orthodox Christians.
The manuscript is a devotional retelling of The Passion narrative from the Gospels, with additional material from the Gospel of Nicodemus, etc.
Calligraphic writing in the Cyrillic alphabet of the Old Church Slavonic language in black ink and some red rubrication.
Title Page refers to: Our Lord Jesus Christ who suffered for our salvation.
Date: Circa 1650s.
17th century brown calf, bevelled wooden boards, brass clasp and brass bosses-Russian binding.
Dimensions: Height: 6 3/4 in., Width: 4 1/4 in., Depth: 2 1/8 in.
Complete: approx. 396 pages.
Language: Church Slavonic
Last page is signed: This book belongs to Ivan Ivanovich Edmskii (most likely 19th century inscription).
Condition: good overall estate condition, spine is tight, remains of closing buckles over wooden boards, stain and discoloration noted due to age and use over the centuries (please view photos for accuracy).
Provenance: private estate.
It is still read among the Russian Old Believers during Lent and Holy Week.
