Description
Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)
Drawings For Painting
stamped with initials, titled and dated '1960- Drawings for Painting./'K.V.' (on mount lower right)
pencil on paper, two drawings mounted as one
18.5 x 28cm (7 5/16 x 11in).
Footnotes:
Provenance
Peter Adam, by whom gifted to the family of the present owner and thence by descent
Private Collection, The Netherlands
The original owner, Peter Adam, was a British filmmaker and author who published books on Eileen Gray and David Hockney, among others.
Although these drawings may not be connected to any known oil paintings from 1960, they are characteristic of Vaughan's style at that time. Both represent figures and landscapes. Typically, we see these elements interpenetrating one another, a theme which he evolved around 1948/49 and which became a central concern by the 1960s. Vaughan was attempting to achieve a balance between abstraction and figuration in his canvases, and drawings such as these assisted him in resolving technical difficulties and compositional problems ahead of commencing a painting.
We are grateful to Gerard Hastings, whose forthcoming book on Keith Vaughan's graphic work will be published by Pagham Press, for compiling this catalogue note.
