Description
Lee, after Charles (Scottish, 1800-1880), The Golfers: A Grand Match Played Over St. Andrew's Links, 1850, hand colored steel engraving by Charles E. Wagstaffe after the original oil painting by Lees, impression 20.75 x 33.25 inches, in a brown wood frame 31 x 42 inches. One of the most famous golf images ever produced, showing a match in 1841 between Sir David Baird of Newbyth and Sir Ralph Anstruther of Balcaskie against Major Hugh Lyon Playfair of St. Andrews and John Campbell of Glensaddel at the home of golf, St. Andrews, Scotland.
Condition
Light foxing visible in the clouds, small areas of white paint to the left of the text immediately underneath the image, put there to perhaps cover up a darker stain, couple very faint scratches to sky at upper left corner, overall good condition with strong colors.
