Item Details
Description
"The Faith of Men and Other Stories" by Jack London, published by Grosset and Dunlap, New York, September 1904.

Hard boards, original publisher's cloth, decorated front board [some soiling and wear, spine fading]; 5.1/4" x 7.1/2"; 286 pages on heavy stock paper + several pages of publisher's ads; a little soiling, good / very good condition.

The major motif across the stories is very similar: man, his hardships and follies both caused by himself, others, misprints and the inclement conditions of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The predominant settings and themes are generally related to the Klondike Gold Rush during the late 1800s (circa-1896) to the early 1900s, most of the characters are prospectors of some variety or another and many of their ends are taken very stoically, in standard London fashion.

Fantastic stories about the cruelty of fate, men, women abandoned, money, its pursuit and the great north, all of which offer an excellent expose as it relates to a man's tenacious mindset and how sometimes it all works out; sometimes it doesn't. This collection provides a really good mix of human character and hope.

John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, 1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. Some of his most famous works include "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang", both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in "The Sea Wolf"
