Due to the high level of technical and artistic expertise required, chromolithographs were never widely used, which makes their availability quite uncommon. The process involved visually breaking down each area of color in an original painting by hand rendering that color onto a stone, then inking and transferring the image—one color at a time—to a sheet of paper. As many as two dozen separate plates could be involved, depending on the image. Because a graphics artist had to create a series of new images from the original painting, the resulting chromolithograph is considered a separate and distinct work of art.
