Original sepia ink drawing. 11.5x19 cm (4½x 7½"), laid down on light card stock.

Signed "E. Lear" in the lower left corner. A scene with a group of men with rifles in the fore- and background, relaxing by a hillside. Lear's affinity for such serene gatherings reappears as a theme throughout his career. This is very likely from the time of his earliest travels to Egypt in 1848-1849.

Glue residue at the extreme right edge of the sheet from where this was once mounted, not affecting the image; small mended tear in the lower right of the image; very good.
