The assignment for the key artwork for the Star Wars U.S. Style A one-sheet movie poster was subcontracted to Tom Jung by Don Smollen, as his company Smith, Smollen & Connelly was busy dealing with an overload of work from Paramount, Columbia, and Universal, who at that time in 1977 were all located in New York City.

Tom was given no direction from Don Smollen other than the struggle of 'good over evil.' After a Saturday morning screening of the film (without any of the footage shot by Industrial Light & Magic) at Universal Pictures offices in New York City, Smollen gave Jung three hardcover ring binder books of 35mm contact sheets, 36 prints to a page. These were from unit photographers roaming around the set/production sites for every part of the film. (These books were donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library and can now be viewed online in the collection of Tom Jung Papers.)

This sketch was one of many sketches by Jung to arrive at a solution until he settled on the utterly unlikely and impossible cross formed by the ray or rays radiating from Luke Skywalker's saber sword, his creative solution to the 'GOOD OVER EVIL' theme.
