Sarreguemines Majolica Vintager Wine Font Cover, Stand and Basin
Dated 1908
Thrice impressed uppercase mark, model no. Q 1801 and 227, G to font base
Modeled as a large tapering banded barrel filled with grapes, one figure at the top crushing the grapes as another figure waits recumbent with open bowl beneath the scaffold foot, the metal spigot directly above, the matching basin as an oval barrel with bracket handles, turquoise interior, the reverse pierced for hanging. Height of font 21 3/4 inches; width of basin 13 3/4 inches.
Note:
At the time of cataloging, no other examples of this form were extant.
Provenance:
By tradition, a gift from President Venustiano Carranza of Mexico, circa 1910-17, to a member of his political staff. By descent to the staff member's grandson. Sold by an agent. Purchased by Gabrielle Ehrenthal, 17 June 2005.
