S.E. View of Heath Church, Derbyshire, England. Pen and watercolor on paper, signed and dated 1785. Overall size: 20 3/4 x 24 1/2 in. Sight size: 13 1/2 x 18 in. Samuel Hieronymus Grimm was an 18th-century Swiss landscape artist who worked in oils, watercolors, and pen & ink media. Critics of his time remarked that Grimm was a "man of genius", his role was to record "anything curious". In 1775, Grimm was known to be in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, and by 1778 was working in London. The British Library possesses 2,662 drawings in twelve volumes by the artist, covering many of the counties of England and a further 886 watercolors, in seven volumes, dedicated to the county of Sussex.
