Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] - [AMERICA AT WAR] Over 100 images, mostly military in subject matter, various dates from Civil War to WWII.

Postcard album, obl. 4.75 x 7.5 in., string-tied spine. 26 realphoto postcards or postcard-sized photographs (that fit into slots in pages). Appear to be WWI German. One with caption: "De Kaise mitdem Kronprinzen und dem Prinzen Heinrich in Westen." (The Kaiser with the Crown Prince and Prince Heinrich in the West.) About half of the postcards are of doctors and nurses (some nuns) and hospital wards (three appear to be in a converted church). A couple photos have men with crutches seated in front. Many of the men wear Katzchen (bill-less caps). One image shows three men making repairs to their uniforms. Another photo shows working men by a rail line. Yet another photo has ten people in striped shirts, one holding an accordion, all wearing kratzchen.

Group of nine "Our Navy" photos, 8 x 10 in. b-&-w. Each with ship's name in gilt on photo. USS New York, Mindanao, Pennsylvania, Helena, Galveston, Relief, Black Hawk, Altair, and Pillsbury.

The images range in size from a gem-sized oval on a calling card to approx. 11 x 15 in. There are 10 cdvs or cdv-sized photographs; five cdv-sized tintypes; 15 cabinet cards, 9 boudoir cards, 18 larger images, 11 of men in groups, the rest of lone men and one of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor; six other sizes; five cdv and cabinet cards with European photographers.

Among the group photos is one group of women; one group of eight men operate a search light; two images appear to be military academies; among the cabinet cards are 4 with "MBS" on the cap plus two others that seem to be academy initials; there is an image of GAR members lined up in front of a building with "J. Tutte Segar Manufacturer;" largest image of men in front of a large house beside a cannon. A few photos show children in uniforms, one with the father (likely) in uniform. European photos include three German photographers, one image is a lithograph of the Kaiser's family (1875), the other two are from Naples, Italy and Cape Town, South Africa. Quite an array of militaria.
